How I was introduced to Bee Keeping. In the middle of April 2011. Jerry, my boss, sent me a small beehive and informed me to paint it and get it ready for some bees. The people in the shop at work were all afraid of bees. I wondered what is his motive for all of this.
On May 1st, Jerry sent over 3 and 1/2 lbs of bees and a queen. Dave met him on the toll road and picked up the bees, and brought them to me. There were a couple of hitch hikers on the outside of the screened in box. This is a name we call bees that were not inside with the queen, but didn't want to leave. My daugher Carolann saw them and petted them on their wings. The bees spent their first night in the kids bedroom.
On May 3rd, I installed the bees in their hive and gave them some sugar water to eat. On May 6th they sat up their colony. Recipe for bee food is 1 Cup water to 1 cup sugar. This will keep them alive until they can get honey. Bee Bread is a mixture of Honey and pollen this is a good fuel and gives them super energy.
Something all Bee Keepers need to do is; keep any eye out for Hive Beetles. These guys are black and as big as a pencil lead. Planting Cat Mint around and under the hives usually keeps them in check. They don't like the sun, so when you open the hive, you may not see them, as they will scurry to hide where they can in the darkness.
Bees are very clean and go outside to poop.
My wife, Helen and two children at home, Travis and Carolann are intrigued with the bees, and help take care of them. They all will have bee suits soon.

Here the bees are "bearding" upon being disturbed.

The hive has been opened and the bees are looking around to see what is happening.

A hive, bottom three layers are where the bees live and keep the brood.(babies). The top two are supers and that is where the honey is placed. This is where the bee keepers take the honey to place in jars.

One quart of honey(2.5 lbs.) from 1 frame, both sides were scraped to get this amount. There are 10 frames in one super box.

The way they look today
Found a swarm in a tree, about 15 thousand bees.

Put them in a new hive.
